A Century On
The Same Ground.
Tiede Farm Equipment is the equipment side of Alex Tiede Farms LLC — a family that's farmed near American Falls since 1908. We buy, service, and resell the same tractors, planters, and harvesters we use on our own potato and grain ground, and we sell our own Idaho potatoes farm-direct. Straight talk, fair prices, from a team that actually farms for a living.
Five Generations, One Farm
A 320-Acre Homestead
John Tiede staked a claim near American Falls and started farming 320 acres of mostly dry-land wheat — no irrigation, no guarantees, just what the ground and the weather would give him.
Coming Home To Dig Wells
John's son Otto came back from World War II and pitched his father on something radical for the time: drilling wells to bring real irrigation to the farm. It worked. By the early 1950s the operation had grown to about 1,200 acres, with roughly 800 under irrigation — and potatoes and sugar beets joined the wheat.
Center-Pivot Irrigation & The Idaho Potato Commission
Otto's son Jim grew up working the farm from a young age and later made his own pitch to Otto — investing in center-pivot irrigation to modernize how the ground was watered. Jim went on to serve as chairman of the Idaho Potato Commission, representing the growers who built Idaho's reputation as the country's potato state. He still says the same thing his father taught him: you don't really own the land, you just take care of it until the next generation takes over.
Trucks, A Business Degree, And A New Equipment Company
Alex Tiede, a graduate in marketing and finance, came back to the farm full-time and now runs his own potato acreage — sharing equipment with his father Jim but managing his own operating loan, expenses, and decisions. When he saw the farm was paying outside contractors to haul seed and compost, he made his own pitch: bring it in-house with the farm's own trucks. That same instinct — buy the right equipment, run it well, and don't waste money on someone else doing the job — is why Tiede Farm Equipment exists today.
"It's harder to carry a farm on than to start from nothing — because you don't want to screw up something the last generation worked so hard to build."
— A sentiment passed down through the Tiede family
Why We Sell Both Tractors And Potatoes
Tiede Farm Equipment grew out of the same equipment we run on our own potato and grain ground — if a machine isn't good enough for our fields, it doesn't go on our lot. And because we're still a working farm first, we sell our own Idaho potatoes farm-direct, in bulk, the same way growers have sold to each other in this valley for generations.
Idaho, Through And Through
A Founding Crop
Potatoes and sugar beets joined the farm's original wheat ground once irrigation made them possible — and potatoes have anchored the operation ever since.
Hunting Out The Back Door
Elk, deer, pheasant, and Canada geese pass through the family's ground every season — a family tradition that comes with a responsibility to farm and hunt as good stewards of the land.
A Close-Knit Industry
Idaho's potato growers compete and cooperate at the same time — sharing information and standing together, from irrigation innovation to defending the potato's reputation nationally.
